The best music for your wedding

Choosing ceremony music can feel really challenging amongst all of the other decisions that need to be made on your wedding day.

So let’s keep it super simple! At most you should only need to choose 5 songs, or maybe even less.

1. 1 for your entry (processional)
2. 2-3 songs to play during the signing of the documents (signing)
3. 1 for your exit (recessional)

So let’s explore what that could look like.

The start of the ceremony, or processional, when you walk down the aisle, is usually when you want all the feels. The song/s you choose here should be something that you love. Some music that captures the essence and sets the flavour of how you want your ceremony to feel. An acoustic version of your favourite song can be a great option. This is particularly good if you like rock, or heavy music!

Some couples may choose 2 songs for their processional. 1 for the wedding party’s entry (e.g. Bridesmaids, flower girls), and then another for the wedding couple, or bride.

If you are including the ‘signing’ within your wedding ceremony it can be a great addition to have a few songs playing while it happens. This gives your guests something to listen to while they are waiting. They can be fun, romantic, or upbeat songs. Preferably songs you both like. I have had some couples just have one song on repeat. However you will find that 2-3 songs will bridge the gap until you come back to finish the ceremony.

The exit, or recessional. Well let’s face it, this is the moment to celebrate! You’ve said all the “I do’s”, you are now officially married. The song you choose here would most likely be super upbeat, exciting, and celebratory! You want it to conjure up feelings of happiness and joy.

You may also want to put together some songs for the prelude, or the time before the ceremony begins, when your guests are arriving and mingling. As well as for directly after the ceremony if people are spending time in the area for photos or if your reception is in the same place as the ceremony.

But what if you’re not really into music, can’t agree on songs, or would prefer something a lot more low key? Here are a few more ideas to help you create the perfect setting:

• Sound scape with organic sound (flute, sound bowls, bells)
• Shamanic or traditional drumming
• Silence (not to be underestimated, this can be ideal at the beach or for smaller and more intimate ceremonies)
• Singing (professional singer or guests joining together in song)
• Acoustic guitar (friend or professional)
• Band (friends or professionals)

If you are looking for a beautiful sound healer for your ceremony, I highly recommend Amanda at Organic Sound Journeys. If you are looking for some inspiration for your playlist, I have collated a lot of songs that many of my couples have used for their ceremonies here on a Spotify playlist.

Don’t underestimate the power of music for your ceremony. It’s such a great opportunity to enjoy some of your favourite songs with the people you love!
